Weeks 2 and 3   (published in Ecuador)

November 25, 2017 by   Comments(1)

Weekends are a good time to explore Sam Cristobal or travel to other islands.  Friday afternoons and Saturday and Sunday are free with later breakfast to enjoy a lie in.

First weekend I explored the town and beaches, just enjoyed the beaches and watching the sea lions in particular. Fascinating with all the new born pups.  A good opportunity to take photos.  Also explored the tree house at El progresso well worth a visit.

I visited the interpretation centre which is very informative re wildlife, history of the island, it's people and geology.   Then carrying on visited Las Tijeteras or Frigate bird hill, snorkel in the bay and then back via Playa Corola.

Work followed a similar pattern to previous week. Monday, Weds and Friday early morning sea lion monitoring then Galapaguerra to feed tortoises.  Did some planting for reforestation very hard work in stoney ground. Planned trip to Isle of Floreanna for following week, checking tents etc. Felt privileged  to be going to Floreanna, the first time there has been a projects abroad group there.

Second weekend had a day at Playa Balquerizo with other projects abroad volunteers. Saw my first ever Orcas on the way there and then had a great beach to ourselves apart from the fabulous pelicans, seals etc.

Sunday did the 360 tour of the island $120 but well worth it but wait for good weather. Snorkelling around kicker rock with sharks, turtles and fish.  Then onto beautiful beaches. Saw a pod of dolphins swimming around the boat and a seahorse, rays and sharks in a lagoon. Fabulous day out.

Floreanna trip a small fishing boat for 3 hours on hard wooden benches.  Very wet and bumpy ride but made up for by the visit to the island only approx 200 inhabitants so we had a house and ...

First few days of work   (published in Ecuador)

November 11, 2017 by   Comments(1)

What a fabulous first few days of work.  We've been doing a variety of tasks from clearing vegetation  for reforestation, preparing soil, removing non endemic invasive species, cleaning a beach and my favourite so far feeding and cleaning the pond for the giant tortoises.

Yesterday it was an early start to record sea lion numbers on the beach with frigate birds overhead.  Then off to cut food for the tortoises and feed them.  Followed by a walk to a beautiful beach. Then we swam in the sea with tortoises, seals, a ray and a pelican all coming to join us. It is such a special place and the wildlife is so abundant.  Sea lions, marine iguanas, frigate birds, Darwin's finches are all so common. The animals are not frightened of you and come close,  but you are requested to keep 2 metres away from them so that you don't impact on their behaviour.

After a physically hard few days at work I'm looking forward to exploring the area and taking photographs of the wildlife over the weekend.

The accommodation is better than I expected a new building in El Progresso for conservation volunteers.  Rooms generally two or three beds and currently got one to myself.

Several shower rooms and meals cooked for you after a hard day at work.

Wifi and Hammocks.

Arrival   (published in Ecuador)

Journey to Columbia was uneventful and surprisingly easy I don't know why I was worried Wendy Porter.  However the flight from Bogota was delayed and from my basic Spanish we had to wait for a second plane and then had a medical emergency over Quito, possibly a heart attack. Fortunately a doctor on board and wasn't too bad after oxygen etc.

As soon as I arrived in Ecuador it all felt wonderfully upbeat from the people to the music.  I'm now on San Cristobsl Island 1000km off the coast of Ecuador.  Had a brief introduction and then walk round the town.  Sea lions and pups all over the beach, about 30 marine iguanas, lots of red crabs on the black rocks and cacti everywhere it's going to be wonderful.

Fellow volunteers from UK,  France, Japan, Denmark, Holland  etc. Good to meet them and the very cheerful Geovanna, William and Jose from Projects abroad.

Sorry photos taking ages to upload. Will try another day.

Off to look after and feed the giant tortoises tommorow at 7am.
