Last night we held our monthly social dinner on the boat Bou el Mogdad. The cruise ship regularly makes trips from Saint Louis north along the river, making stops at Dagana, Richard Toll and Podor. 28 volunteers along with staff members walked up the three flights of steep stairs to the top floor of the boat where they were to eat dinner under a large Mauritanian tent to block the wind. There was a beautiful view of the bridge and we all enjoyed each other's company while enjoying a nice meal!

L’expérience sénégalaise de cet été, a été une expérience riche en émotions. Cela va être certainement difficile d’exprimer réellement ce que j’ai ressenti mais je vais essayer au mieux de relater tout ce que le Sénégal m’a permis de vivre.

Mon arrivée de nuit s’est faite en même temps que certains autres volontaires mineurs venus pour des missions de deux semaines. Une arrivée de nuit qui a été une sacrée aventure avec Habib qui a su s’occuper de tout ce petit monde avec humour et bonne humeur. C’était parti pour plus d’un mois ! Après une nuit à l’hôtel due à notre arrivée tardive, nous faisons route vers Saint Louis et Habib nous conduira chacun dans nos familles d’accueil. Selon lui, la famille Fall où j’ai vécu, était la meilleure, et effectivement je peux dorénavant dire que c’est une famille formidable où j’ai passé un merveilleux mois.

Il est vrai que l’arrivée peut être dure notamment par le dépaysement, heureusement j’ai été bien entourée. J’étais dans une super famille que j’ai appris à connaitre au fil des jours et j’avais une colocataire formidable également venue en mission ici, même s’il ne s’agissait pas de la même structure.

Le stade de l’adaptation passée, le Sénégal a tout à nous apporter. Le lendemain j’ai rencontré l’équipe de Projects Abroad, Zale était venue me chercher pour faire le trajet de Sor à l’île où se situe le bureau. Là j’ai été prise en charge par Fina qui m’a fait visiter la ville et apporté des informations essentielles pour ma mission. Je n’aurais que des compliments à dire sur toutes ses personnes (également Erica, Emma, Moctar et Tayib) qui ont toujours répondu présent.

J’étais donc venue à Saint Louis pour faire un stage en Droits de l’Homme auprès de la RADDHO (Rencontre Africaine pour les Droits de l’Homme). J’avais entrepris les démarches pour faire ce stage car je suis étudiante en droit international. Pourquoi le Sénégal ? Je l’avoue, c’est notamment parce que c’est un pays francophone et en tant que bonne française, mon niveau d’anglais est loin d’être parfait, je considérais que celui-ci n’était pas suffisant pour travailler efficacement dans un pays anglophone. C’est donc Moctar, le directeur de Projects Abroad ici qui m’a amenée, en me montrant le chemin (enfin heureusement j’ai trouvé un raccourci par la suite, c’est qu’il fait chaud à marcher en plein soleil par ici !). J’ai alors rencontré une nouvelle équipe formidable. Le directeur, les stagiaires sénégalais et les autres volontaires de Projects Abroad.

J’ai passé des moments à rire, à discuter, à apprendre, des moments inoubliables dans ces locaux. J’ai même eu le droit à des surprises étonnantes avec eux, notamment participer à une émission de radio avec ma comparse canadienne et Malik (stagiaire de la RADDHO)

ou assister à la création du conseil municipal des enfants de la ville et rencontrer par la même occasion le Maire. J’ai également travaillé plus individuellement sur un rapport qui nous est demandé de faire, pour cela, tous les moyens ont été mis à ma disposition et j’ai été mise en contact avec de nombreuses personnes.

Outre les semaines de travail, des soirées étaient organisées et j’ai, à cette occasion, rencontré de nombreux autres volontaires, avec qui j’ai pu confronter mon expérience et nouer une amitié certaine. Cette expérience sénégalaise nous permet d’aller plus loin que le pays puisqu’on retrouve des personnes de tous horizons (Anglais, Américains, Espagnols, Japonais…, étudiants ou personnes actives). J’ai également pu visiter le pays puisque des sorties sont mises en place par le bureau ou puisqu’ils nous aident à trouver des autres moyens de visite. Je peux maintenant affirmer que j’ai vécu une tempête dans le désert du Sahel au Nord du Sénégal. Périple qui va rester dans toutes les mémoires de ceux qui ont été, avec moi, dans cette situation.

Enfin, une chose est sure, cette expérience a été réellement enrichissante et ceci grâce à toutes les personnes qui m’ont entourée durant ce séjour, ma famille formidable qui m’a préparée les meilleurs repas (je rêve de yassa poulet tous les jours maintenant !),

m’a fait rire et m’a permis d’apprendre beaucoup sur la culture sénégalaise ; ma super colocataire arrivée avant moi et qui a su me donner plein de conseils ; l’équipe de Projects Abroad et les autres volontaires avec qui j’ai partagé de merveilleuses aventures.

Monday evening, the volunteers continued their "tour," gathering at Eliana's house to make popcorn with her family!!

After popping it in the pot, Adja, Eliana's host sister, added a mixture of powdered milk and sugar and mixed it all together well.

It was a yummy combination, and we wound up with powder all over our faces!

On Saint Patrick's Day some of the volunteers headed out to Gandiol, about a half our from Saint Louis, to go quad biking! Upon arriving at the Teranga camp site, our guide gave us a quick lesson about how to operate the quads...

...and then we paired up and were off!

Along our drive we stopped to admire some of the beautiful scenery! Mangroves,

and onion fields. (Apparently the farmers water the fields by hand, using one bucket full of water per little square of onion plants!)

...Then we got stuck in prickly plants!

After a while we stopped by the river, took off our helmets and went swimming to cool off!

We arrived back at the camp site about two hours after heading out and enjoyed a relaxing lunch by the pool!

We hopped back into our little truck to head back to Saint Louis. In true excursion spirit we had to push a little bit before we really got on the road!

After an exciting and fun morning, sleep took over and the truck brought a bunch of sleeping Toubabs back to Saint Louis!

 

English volunteer Catherine has been in Senegal since January on a teaching project, working in elementary schools teaching English, as well as giving evening classes to adults twice a week. As Easter break approaches, Catherine prepares for her last few classes by teaching about England, where she comes from: the Queen, London, and the Beatles! She gave a lesson on English history and geography, as well as had her class sing a Beatles song!

 

A dynamic and passionate teacher, Catherine had her students engaged and having fun while they learned! At the end of their lesson, she was even presented with presents on behalf of the kids!

 

On Friday, March 16 we celebrated the birthday of our youngest volunteer, Eve, who entered double digits, turning TEN!! 

Eve is here in Senegal with her mom, Dana who is doing a mid-wifery project at the hospital, and her father John who is helping out a lot with our construction projects! Dana & John invited all the volunteers to Café Rosa in the city on Friday afternoon, where we all sang Happy Birthday to eve and enjoyed some delicious cake!

Even before the cake arrived, Eve was decked out with an ice cream cone, and then added a sparkley princess crown and boa to top it all off. She received gifts from volunteers (lots of chocolate, sugar peanuts, a small kora, two purses and clementines...her favorite fruit!) and blew out her candles!

It was fun to spend the afternoon all together celebrating!

We left after the cake with a nice sugar rush to help finish off the work day!

On Thursday, March 8 (International Women's Day) our volunteers started the construction of a toilet and a shower in the third and final daraa. The daraa is found in the neighborbood of Darou, and the foundation was already built by the marabout, who ran out of funding and was unable to continue the building. The first day, our volunteers watered bricks to help them harden, and they also leveled off the existing foundation! Check out the photos!

On Wednesday, March 7^th, volunteers, staff and older talibé from both of our Talibé centers rented the stadium for the second time to play against each other. The first match, held a few months ago saw Association Sans Frontiers win, so the Projects Abroad center came to the stadium this time looking for redemption. And redemption they found, winning 2-0! Volunteers and younger talibé supported from the sidelines also, cheering on their respective team!

 

 On Friday, February 25 volunteers gathered at the French Cultural Center to see a Mama Sadio concert! As an extra plus two of our volunteers played with the band! Elisabeth from Denmark on bass and backup vocals and Florian from Switzerland on saxaphone! Check out some of the awesome photos taken by volunteers Elke and Catherine!

Our 2012 Campaign here in Senegal is going very well, in both our Talibé centers and in the daraas where the construction is taking place. The second construction project was finished on the 29th of February where the volunteers assembled to paint and put on the finishing touches!
