Yesterday was a really important day in Mexico as one of the most beautiful traditions was held.
The Spring Equinox brings great expectation among the habitants of Chichen Itza and all the visitors who travel miles in order to watch one of me most emblematic phenomenons form the Maya world.
The spectacle begins around 4 PM when the sun rays touch the Kukulkan Pyramid. The effect created by the amazing architecture of the pyramid is just amazing…a giant snake that crawls down the stairs is present. This effect is complete when the shadows creating the effect touches the head of snake in the base of the pyramid.
It's been said that during this time, renovating energies are all around. That is why everybody has to wear white clothing. They assure this phenomenon really brings peace among them.
Next time you are in Mexico, traveling in the south during this time, do not hesitate to experience this celebration!

Today, March 18th we celebrate the day in which Mexican oil became property of the Mexicans. It separated all influences over it from other countries which obviously had really high interests on Mexican oil.
The Mexican petroleum nationalization was the expropriation of all oil reserves, facilities, and foreign oil companies in Mexico in 1938. It took place when President and General Lazaro Cardenas declared that all mineral and oil reserves found within Mexico belong to the government. It is one of the Celebrations of Mexico, celebrating the date when the President General Lazaro Cardenas, declared that all oil reserves found in Mexican soil belonged to the nation, following the principle stated in the Article 27 of the Constitution of 1917.
This measure caused an international boycott of Mexican products in the following years, especially by the United States, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

Fifth visit to Brayan in the hospital where he is having his treatment. I was happy to see that he was awake by the time I got there. This time it was mum the one sleeping!
Brayan told me that he was feeling good! He is still trying to learn some English so hopefully we find a way we can get him some english material! After speaking to him, his mum woke up!
She told me that Brayan will be changed from school to a school for kids with special needs. His sister support him so much that she also decided to be changed so she could be with his older brother!
Everything is doing fine with him so far. So I am happy for him!

CIVS Guadalajara is a department ran by SEMARNAT (Natural Affairs in Mexico) which is in charge of the rehabilitation of wild animals giving them the opportunity to go back into their natural habitat.
Andres Gonzalez, Ernesto Ramos,Tanjana Kotschenreuther, staff and volunteers have been working really hard to get all this birds rehabilitated! This is a very important labour in which hundreds of different endangered species get a second chance to live. Projects Abroad volunteers have been contributing for more than 7 years now in this animal care centre!
A video has been filmed on this liberation of birds. Andres Gonzalez talks about the process of liberation of these birds and gives some interesting facts on the current situation of this matter.
It is in Spanish so it will be great for those who want to practice too! Enjoy!
Projects Abroad Mexico wants to congratulate them for this great success and for the passion they print in every day's work!

What about my experience in Mexico? Quite an « old » story now( that was a few months ago)! I was doing French and English conversation classes in Guadalajara University, teaching students who came as volunteers to improve their capacities in those languages.
I really enjoyed it as we could discuss many subjects about Mexico or France and Britain, I told them about life here in Europe and they told me about their country, culture, habits or we could sometimes have a good laugh together. I always prepared questions or a subject to talk about but it sometimes went an unexpected way, miles away from the beginning of the discussion...
Indeed those were very enriching moments, a real win-win, I could I hope help those students speak French or English better while I too could learn a lot about Mexico. This was of course completed by meeting a lot of people (you always find someone ready to talk to you in the street or in buses if you travel across the country) and living with a real Mexican family who were ever so friendly and ready to chat and tell me about everything, from cooking and daily life of course to more serious matters.
Here is a photo I took un dia de fiesta, como tantos! in fact El Dia del Grito if I remember well which I could call "Modern and traditional Mexico", some of my students watching traditional dances at the university.
tThat's what those missions are: working there and living with the people, you do get to know the country from within, which you never do when you come as a tourist. I really liked this and I am getting ready to go to Bolivia on a similar mission and now discover that country.

It is the fourth visit to Brayan in the hospital. For the ones who do not know...Projects Abroad made a donation for the coverage of the transport expenses for Brayan (12 years old) to attend his weekly treatment.
This time he was asleep and sadly I could not speak to him or take a picture to show you this time. I spoke to his mum and she told me that Brayan is doing good but a bit slow in school due to some ear issues he is having as side effect of his illness.
We all hope he gets better and that he can speed up in school a bit! All our best wishes!

On the 24th of February we celebrate the most important emblem in our country…The Mexican Flag. A flag that has been changing throughout time.
The Mexican Flag is a vertical tricolor of green , white, and red with the national coat of arms charged in the center of the white stripe. While the meaning of the colors has changed over time, these three colors were adopted by Mexico following independence from Spain during the country's War of Independence, and subsequent First Mexican Empire. The current flag was adopted in 1968, but the overall design has been used since 1821, when the First National Flag was created. The current law of national symbols, Law on the National Arms, Flag, and anthem that governs the use of the national flag has been in place since 1984.
Red, white, and green are the colors of the national liberation army in Mexico. The central emblem is the Aztec pictogram for Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City), the center of their empire. It recalls the legend that inspired the Aztecs to settle on what was originally a lake-island. The form of the coat of arms was most recently revised in 1968. A ribbon in the national colors is at the bottom of the coat of arms. Throughout history, the flag has changed four times, as the design of the coat of arms and the length-width ratios of the flag have been modified.
However, the coat of Arms has had the same features throughout: an eagle, holding a serpent in its talon, is perched on top of a prickly pear cactus; the cactus is situated on a rock that rises above a lake. The coat of arms is derived from an Aztec legend that their gods told them to build a city where they spot an eagle on a nopal eating a serpent, which is now Mexico City. The current national flag, the Fourth National Flag, is also used as the Mexican naval ensign by ships registered in Mexico.
By the way, the Mexican flag won the award for the most beautiful flag of the world.

As you may have noticed already in Mexico we like to sing along any song we find in our way! You will find people singing everywhere.
This last Thursday we arranged a Karaoke Night! Everybody arrived at 8 PM to our office and from there we headed off to the place. The name of it…'Las Veguitas' or 'Little Vegas'. The place was quiet and calm until the songs chosen by the guys in our table started. Not a long time passed when everybody started feeling like picking up more songs to sing along.
It was a great night full of some classics and 'great' voices…no, really…GREAT voices in the stage!!!
Thanks again to all the guys for attending, we had a great time!!!
See you next! Next salsa class cooking so stay tuned!
