Madurai, India (9 June 2011- 23 June 2011)

Volunteering in the Arthur Asirvatham Hospital in Madurai has made my 2 weeks in India so priceless. I have learnt so much from the doctor I was shadowing, Dr Arthur. He is such a good doctor where he showed great empathy to his patients, even though he has his own hospital, he at the same time serving in the government hospital too. Despite his busy schedule, he never fails to go for morning rounds every day and check on every patient in the hospital before he starts seeing walk-in patients. He also made some time to teach me and explain to me things which I didnt understand. He is such an inspiring doctor, a well skilled, knowleagable and yet so humble.
I can't express enough how great this journey was to me not only as a medical student but also as a person as a whole. I could see the challenges the doctors face here every day because of the poor healthcare system and education amongst the people which lead to health inequalities and at the same time, they are trying hard to give better treatment and improve health.
This trip has inspired me to become a better doctor in the future, to reach out for the less fortunate and to do as much as I can to make a little difference in this world. I dont believe anyone or I can in any way save the world and I dont have big dreams that make people in awe. I just hope that through all the experiences I gained in Mongolia (2008),bnow India and many more things that I am going to learn in the future, will equip me well and enable me to touch and help people that needs it in the community little by little.
